We want to take a few special out-of-the-way trips. A list of those we plan to accomplish are below, though I'm sure there will be additional ones along the way.
Torres del Paine- National Park in Argentina. There is both the "W" trek (4 days) and the "Circuit" trek (8 days). We're undecided as to which one we'll be doing.
Ciudad Perdida- The "Lost City" in Colombia is a recently discovered Indian city near the Caribbean Coast. The six day trek through the forest takes you to the 5th century B.C. city.
Colca Canyon- Though often promoted as the deepest canyon in the world, Colca Canyon is actually the second deepest. What's the deepest you ask? No... it's not the Grand Canyon (Colca is approximately twice as deep), it's the newly discovered Cotohuasi Canyon, also in Peru. Colca, located near the city of Arequipa in Peru, is 10,725 feet deep.
Antarctica Cruise- Cruises leave from Ushuaia (the southernmost city in the world) for 8-20 day trips. Because pre-booking is prohibitively expensive (starting at $5,000 per person for the shortest trips) we may try to find a last-minute cruise.
Galapagos Islands- We will likely head straight to the islands before booking a cruise as last-minute deals tend to abound. We'll likely opt for the longer 8 day cruise as you get to see significantly more wildlife.
Skiing in the Andes- This is going to be largely dependent on our schedule. If we find ourselves close enough to the ski resorts in the June-August timeframe we'll definitely spend some time skiing.
Parque Tayrona- This Colombian National Park is located near the above "Ciudad Perdida" and is known for its unspoilt Caribbean beaches and privacy. There are very few tourist facilities and travelers rent hammocks only steps from the ocean. It is said that a few days here is an incredibly peaceful experience.
Amazon Rainforest- We aren't sure where we'll be spending time in the Amazon region. Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru (and of course Brazil) all have diverse rainforest areas considered to be part of the Amazon basin.
